The Russian martial art of Systema in South West

Systema

What is Systema?

Systema is a martial art developed for and by Russian (Soviet) Special Forces using centuries-old battlefield-tested Slavic hand-to-hand combat traditions, notably those developed by the cossacks.

The literal translation of Systema is the system. It is a complete set of concepts and training components that enhance one's physical, psychological and spiritually wellbeing.

Systema is a complete health and survival system that includes multiple disciplines, such as armed and unarmed combat, weapon disarming, striking, grappling, takedowns, work with multiple opponents and joint locks/breaks.

Unlike other martial arts, Systema training is not based upon repeating a set of techniques or kata. Instead, Systema is based on principles that apply to all systema training and practices, and all systema combat aspects use natural movement to exert influence on the opponent and resolve the conflict situation.

Systema however goes far beyond pure combat applications. Systema is also a training system for the mind, body and spirit. For a day-to-day life, it offers training in resilience and stress management, mobility and endurance. It's a great fitness tool offering full body conditioning.

What style of Systema do we teach?

We practice and teach the Russian martial art of Systema as taught by Mikhail Ryabko and Vladimir Vasiliev.

How do I find out more?

We are posting regular material on our social networks for the students to self-study or explore, but don't be limited to these. There is wealth of material on Systema on internet. YouTube is a good place to start.

I'd like to try a class what do I need to do?

Just book one of our regular weekly classes and give it a try, your first class is free. Contact us on : systemabristol@gmail.com

People normally arrive 5-10 minutes before the class begin, so you'll have time for a quick chat with other members or one of the instructors.

We recommend you actually participate rather than watch your first class and because not two Systema classes are quite the same, you may want to try a few classes to experience a variety of what Systema has to offer before deciding if it's for you.

What should I wear in class?

Anything you are comfortable in, most of us wear a t-shirt and loose trousers or shorts. Depending on the venue we're training we might train barefoot or comfortable trainers.

How fit will I need to be before I can begin training?

Systema is a health and survival system, training can be undertaken by practically anybody, we have wide range of ages and fitness levels in class and we are all working to improve our own ability over time, all that is needed is a willingness to try.

I'm from another styles of martial art will I need to start again?

Many Systema practitioners are experienced martial artists of other styles. A very appealing aspect of Systema is that it has no strict rules, rigid structure or limitations there are no forms or kata's to memorize, no belts and no gradings, so you don't have to start all over again. You just bring those hard earned skills with you, and find new ways to apply them.
